Construction Diary
Week eight- November 7 2004

With breaks in the weather, much progress has been made over the last week and work has begun on the northern section of the design area. This, combined with the southern earth works, will form the other half of the double vortex, forming the "heart" of the Heart of Reeds design.

Work continues on the northern earth works, making the curved ditches and banks which form the intricate curves and patterns of the design. The central circular pond is now in place, as is the embankment, that will eventually carry the boardwalk through the reeds. The footpaths and bridges will be constructed in the Spring when the banks have settled.

This week, the viewing mound will be brought to its full height, which will give a great view across the whole site. Most of the main sluices are now in place. These will allow control of the water levels through the site.

In the next couple of weeks the final pipes and sluices will be put in place, completing the first phase of the design.
It has been pleasing to see the high level of water in what will eventually be the pond-dipping area, served by a wheelchair-accessible platform, and already the heron has been using this new water habitat.
